Conversations

As much as I enjoy motivating or talking to others about getting fit, staying fit etc sometimes it gets unbearable when talking to a person that thinks they know it all yet have no clue. I totally understand that my lifestyle might not be congruent with my Kenyan culture and background, but I hope more and more people can be open minded and perhaps learn something from my experience. Whatever happened to “knowledge is power” lean on someone that knows something you want to learn more about…..smh.

These are some actual conversations, questions or comments I’ve had thrown my way. I know that people get intimidated by what they don’t fully understand but it’s hilarious listening to some of the advice I receive (from non-fit people) about my workouts, ways of eating and eating habits. Everyone has an opinion, but unless you’ve walked a mile in my shoes and fully grasp what I do….your opinion is moot :)

Lady: You look great! What do you do to keep your body this fit?

Me: I weight train 4 days a week, do cardio every evening 7 days a week and try to maintain a clean diet at least 90% of the time.

Lady: You workout everyday? That cannot be healthy? Everybody deserves a day off….and I can’t believe that you’re not able to eat everything you want with working out 7 days a week!

Me: Working out doesn’t mean you get to eat anything and everything. The body will not change unless a calorie deficit is created and fed quality calories  in the right amounts and at the right time.

Guy: Do you never get bored of eating the same variety of food day in, day out?

Me: Yes I do…but I understand that it’s more about the quality of food. The less variety of food I eat, the easier and faster for it to get digested by my body

Guy: That’s so boring, I don’t understand why you would do that to yourself….You could use a couple of extra pounds.

Me: Brr…..OMG this meeting room is always so cold

Lady: If you ate more than you currently do…perhaps you wouldn’t be so cold

Me: Lmao!

Lady: When are you going to stop working out and restricting your food? You can’t possibly do this for the rest of your life??

Me: I’m not doing this to ever stop….a lifestyle change means I will always workout, I will eat what I want, whenever I want as long as I plan for it or clean it up right after. I will take a break from both whenever I need to but working out and eating clean is now integral to my life.

Guy: You are obsessed with looking good that’s why you spend so much time working out

Me: I enjoy the benefits I reap from it and will do what it takes to keep at it for as long as I live.

Lady: Can’t wait to see what happens to you when you have a family, children…I wonder if you will be able to keep this fitness thing up.

Me: Me too :)

Guy: You do not eat enough…you’re starving yourself!

Me: oh yeah??

Lady: Advice me on what to do so I can start loosing weight….Will do anything you ask. I’ve been taking the group classes at the gym 4 times a week for the past year and a half but no results.

Me: Clean up your food…I defined this clearly…and increase your workout intensity, use heavier weights in the group classes instead of the 2.5 Ibs.

Lady: I tried using the 5 Ibs once, but I was sweating, I don’t like to sweat.

Me:  Sweating is a very good thing, it means your body is working, you want your body to work for it to change.

Lady: I really don’t like to sweat….I will try clean up my diet let you know how it goes.

Me:*Blink blink*

Lady: Are You on steroids?

Me: *blink*

Guy: Does that mean you will NEVER EVER eat ice cream, cookies, cake and all those things that you like to eat?

Me: I don’t crave most of the things I used to like anymore because my tastebuds have changed. Every once in a while I do enjoy a slice of cake or pie and my body is able to handle those things without impeding my progress/condition.

you do look great really great actually. Work on the face now, it does show some age… age is a beautiful thing though.

I love this piece. It very true. Some people think that I am obsessed just because I try to stay motivated, talk about working out and eating clean. The truth is, they never lifted their lazy behinds to go work out, or stuck to an exercise regime for more than afew weeks.

I am also obsessed with eating right and exercising. I love challenging my body and breaking out in sweat. Love your tonned body. Would love to have that someday. Love this article. Keep up the good work.
